It’s the last stretch to the General Election which is just five months away, and President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Jubilee Party choice, is leaving nothing to chance as he fights to retain his place.
In order to beat the Opposition onslaught, the threat that is National Super Alliance (NASA), Uhuru and his strategists are working round the clock and have identified a group of people they hope to pocket in order to make inroads in Opposition strongholds.
Reports have it, Uhuru is targeting Governors aligned to ODM where the ruling party does not have strong candidates, getting them to ditch the Opposition and run on a Jubilee ticket.
In exchange, the targeted politicians will receive millions of shillings in campaign funds for themselves after nominations as the ruling Jubilee Party looks to bite into the Opposition cake by winning over supporters.
Once the deal is reached, they will be made to make Uhuru’s reelection a top agenda in their campaigns.
According to the Daily Nation, any Opposition Governor who refuses to sing the tune is slapped with an opponent.
“This opponents is intensely financed by the party or their deputies are snatched away from them and asked to run against the incumbent,” the newspaper published on Saturday, March 18.
The strategy seems to be working as a number of Opposition leaders are defecting to the ruling party, creating the perception that Jubilee Party is in control in their counties.
National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso has been quoted saying the Governors are a crucial part of Uhuru’s reelection campaign because of the number of voters crossing over with them.
Five Opposition Governors have already jumped ship and joined Jubilee. They are; Ken Lusaka (Bungoma), Salim Mvurya (Kwale), Alfred Mutua (Machakos -ally), Hussein Dado (Tana River) and Ukur Yatani (Marsabit- ally).
Next week, during a tour of South Nyanza, Uhuru is said to be targeting Kisii Governor James Ongwae and his Nyamira counterpart John Nyangarama as part of in his re-election schemes.
But ODM has rubbished the plot by Uhuru saying they are insignificant, that voters will see right through his selfish interests.
