Deputy President William Ruto on Wednesday, May 17, officially endorsed Vivo Energy Managing Director Polycarp Igathe as Mike Sonko’s running mate.
This is after Sonko announced Igathe as his number two in the race for Nairobi Governor in which the pair hopes to unseat the incumbent Evans Kidero of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party during the August 8 General Election.
Ruto and their Senatorial counterpart Johnson Sakaja hosted the two at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani.
This happened amid the revelation that State House single handedly picked Igathe as Sonko’s running mate after interviewing eleven suitors.
According to William Ruto, the two are a dynamic duo and will win the Nairobi seat by a landslide.
“We are not playing a 50-50 game here. We are confident that with Igathe on board, the Nairobi chapter is closed.” He said.
The flamboyant politician whose philanthropy has made him popular with the City’s low income earners, settled on the Vivo MD on Tuesday throwing former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru with whom he had a pact, under the bus.
It is said the two had a pre-nominations agreement that was to see Wanjiru named running mate if Sonko won and vice versa.
Wanjiru finished a distant third behind Sonko and former Gatanga MP and former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth in the nominations.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had tasked trusted State House operatives to interview Sonko’s running mates after the Senator reportedly refused to step down for Kenneth, his preferred candidate for the seat. Sonko was offered a CS post to drop out and support the more ‘respectable’ Kenneth but he declined.
President Kenyatta’s private secretary Jomo Gecaga and Solicitor General Njee Muturi oversaw the recruitment following secret meetings in State House.
They settled on Igathe who is also said to be Jubilee’s strategist and Uhuru’s adviser on matters energy.
