Yesterday, Wednesday, May 17, Nairobi Senator cum gubernatorial aspirant Mike Sonko who was in the company of Deputy President William Ruto, were given a heroic welcome by residents of Eastleigh, to be found in Kamkunji constituency.
During the two senior Jubilee Party politicians’ visit to the sprawling business neighbourhood, Ruto also handed Kamkunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan the Jubilee Party certificate to contest for the seat in the forthcoming General Election scheduled for August.
Also, during the Eastleigh shut-down, several leaders endorsed Sonko’s candidature for the Nairobi Governor race against the incumbent Evans Kidero of ODM.
They included National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, Jubilee’s choice for Nairobi Senate Johnson Sakaja, nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi and Yusuf Hassan himself.
Duale and Hassan who have strong influence in the area, promised to mobilise the Eastleigh residents, especially the Somali community, to vote overwhelmingly for Sonko who recently picked Vivo Energy MD Polycarp Igathe as his running mate.
During the impromptu visit, hundreds of residents of Eastleigh poured into the streets to catch a glimpse of the DP and the flambo Senator.
The residents, placards in hand, chanted songs in support of Sonko, with some saying they will send Kidero packing due to the poor service delivery by the county government in the area.
The Somali community in Eastleigh supporting Sonko is a big boost for the Senator who already enjoys huge backing by low income earners in the city. They reportedly voted for Peter Kenneth during the Jubilee primaries.
Sonko and the Kamkunji MP who was part of ‘Team Kenneth’ reportedly mend the bridge with the latter promising to work together when the Senator to help him win the gubernatorial seat.
