The body of bodyguard Ayub Ndoloni, who was reported missing after Public Works PS Mariam El Maawy vehicle was ambushed by heavily armed al Shabaab militants at Milihoi, Lamu West, on Thursday, July 13, has been found.
The AP officer’s badly burnt body was reportedly found in Boni Forest near the scene of the attack on Saturday at 10am by officers conducting a security operation.
The recovery was confirmed by Lamu county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri who said the body was taken to the Mpeketoni Subcounty Hospital mortuary.
“It is true. Security officers on an operation have discovered the body of PS Mariam El Maawy’s bodyguard today at around 10am in the forest near the incident at Milihoi … He died defending his boss. He went down defending the dignity of this country. I knew him for more than three years. He was a diligent soldier,” Kanyiri said.
Three security officers lost their lives in the Thursday attack that also saw the killing of El Maawy’s 21-year-old nephew, Arif Kassim Athman.
Arif, a pilot trainee, was burnt beyond recognition after been trapped in the vehicle that was later blown up by the terrorists.
He was buried at Mokowe Cemetery in Lamu West on the evening of Friday.
The bodyguard was reported missing following the attack by over over 30 militants and police believed he had been taken hostage by them.
The death of the bodyguard brings the death toll of those who perished in the Thursday attack to five.
The PS was airlifted to Nairobi for treatment. She is said to have been shot on the shoulder and leg.
