The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is quitting its soft approach towards the National Super Alliance (NASA), if a recent response to the coalition’s demands is anything to go by.
The commission has responded to various claims on rigging and hacking of the IEBC systems as outlined by Nasa.
Through a letter dated Thursday, August 10 which was addressed to Nasa’s James Orengo, IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati outlined the commission’s jurisdiction and demanded that the Opposition allow them enough time to conduct tallying as is required by law.
Briefing the country at Bomas of Kenya on the night of Thursday, Chebukati revealed that he received the official complaints from Nasa but was quick to add that the allegations were lacking in nature. He said there was no evidence furnished by the outfit.
“Although you refer to data that supposedly supports the number of votes referred to in your letter, you have not attached copies of Form 34As or 34Bs or the raw data allegedly contained in the IEBC servers for purpose of authentication of your tabulation and comparison with the actual data received by the Commission.” Part of the response to Nasa read.
Adding: “We are therefore unable to comment on the character of the alleged raw data since we have not seen it. We request that if indeed you have such data, you forward it to us for our review and verification.”
Chebukati strongly dismissed the allegations by the Opposition that IEBC had withheld the accurate and lawful results in their servers.
“At the time your said letter was received, the Commission had received only 131 Form 34Bs meaning that the transmission of the results of the Presidential Election have still not been completed. The accurate and lawful result will thus only be ascertained once all the Form 34Bs are received by the Commission and the results therein collated. Your assertion that the accurate and lawful results are contained in the IEBC servers is grossly incorrect and premature.” Chebukati’s letter also read in part.
Zipo.co.ke reported that Nasa through Musalia Mudavadi, had demanded that the IEBC which is mandated to manage elections in Kenya, declare Raila Odinga President because he won and Kalonzo Musyoka his deputy.
