Mwanaisha Chidzuga double loss as mother, hubby lose polls

Zainab Chidzuga was defending her Kwale Women Rep seat while Danson Mungatana wanted to be Garissa Governor.

On Tuesday, August 8, Kenyans joined the queues to cast a vote for their preferred leaders in what pundits called the hotliest-contested polls in country’s history.

Days later, all the results, right from the Members of County Assembly to the President are in and as in the previous elections, casualties are many, perhaps more that the elections preceding this one thanks to the record numbers in candidates who vied.

Among the disappointed is a K24 newscaster whose two loved ones were contesting for different seats. Her mother and her baby daddy lost in the just concluded polls.

Former Assistant Minister and Mwanaisha’s ‘husband’, Danson Mungatana, came a distant fourth in the Tana River gubernatorial elections. The race was won by ODM’s Major (Rtd) Dhadho Godana with 25,663 votes.

The news anchor’s mother, Zainab Chidzuga, also failed to defend her seat as Kwale Women Representative. She lost to ODM’s Zuleikha Juma Hassan.

Zainab was vying on a Jubilee ticket after ditching the Orange party during a wave of defection in the region last year. Her loss came as a shocker following her endorsement and direct nomination by ruling party Jubilee to vie for the Kwale County Women Rep seat.

On Friday, August 11, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafukla Chebukati, declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the presidential race. Raila who is perhaps the biggest loser in the 2017 polls has since rejected the results.
