Deputy President William Ruto said on Friday, September 8 that Jubilee was doing the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga a favour by agreeing to participate in the repeat polls.
He lashed at the Opposition leader for demanding changes at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission as a condition to participating in the October 17 elections.
“We are doing Raila Odinga and the Court a favour by agreeing to participate in the election again, we won the election. Tunarudia uchaguzi kwa sababu mimi na Rais Uhuru ni wangwana (We have agreed to the repeat polls because President Uhuru and I are gentlemen),” said Ruto.
The repeat elections were ordered by the Supreme Court after it nullified the August 8 one saying it was marred with massive irregularities and illegalities. Kenyatta and Odinga will be the only contestants following a gazette notice by IEBC.
Meanwhile, the Nasa flagbearer has been calling for an overhaul of the electoral body ahead of the next month polls saying the body will not be allowed to oversee the second exercise as currently constituted, after it bungled the last one.
Raila is also on record rejecting the October 17 date noting that IEBC should not have set the new date without consulting him first.
The commission responded to the complaints saying it settled on the date to avoid interfering with the national exams. Raila however said the students will “not die” if they fail to sit their papers as scheduled.
DP Ruto on the other hand, while speaking in Naivasha during the campaign trail alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta, added that the President is the only person who possesses the powers to postpone national exams.
“The only person who can postpone exams in Kenya is the President Uhuru Kenyatta not Raila Odinga,” Ruto noted.
