Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has jumped ship, he has quit the National Super Alliance-affiliated Wiper Party and joined Jubilee Party.
The county head is now backing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection bid.
That happened barely a day after he rubbished reports that he was decamping from the Opposition coalition where Wiper which is headed by Kalonzo Musyoka, has a big stake.
Mr Musyoka is Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate.
“I am shocked that some politicians are abusing me behind my back and yet I have not spoken a word. Are they scared of me?” the former journalist had said on Sunday, October 8.
But come Tuesday, October 10, Samboja welcomed President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in Voi during a Jubilee Party rally and promised to work with their government.
This is the third high profile back-to-back ‘defection’ this week, all from the Coast, after former Mombasa gubernatorial candidate Hassan Omar ditched the Opposition in favour of the ruling party. Still during Uhuru’s Mombasa trip last weekend, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali (Independent) who had vowed to support Raila Odinga, changed his mind and now supports the Uhuru.
Also, Samboja’s predecessor, John Mruttu, has left ODM and is now in Jubilee.
Mruttu lost in the Orange Party primaries ahead of the August 8 poll.
