Classic FM presenter Maina Kageni surprised many on Wednesday, May 7, with the announcement that his name will be on the ballot in the forthcoming poll slated for August 8, hoping to become the next Women Representative of Nairobi.
The insanely popular radio co-host will be vying for the seat as an independent candidate and his symbol is human hair weave.
He claims to have been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and that he is also in possession of a certificate from the registrar of political parties.
Through a video that went viral, Maina says that he has all the qualities that makes a successful woman representative, that he is pro active, outspoken and ready to work.
According to him, his decision was shaped by his sea of followers and the Classic 105 family who challenged him to do more for the women he has been advocating on his morning show.
For the longest time, Maina Kageni has become popular with women and has been tirelessly fighting for their rights on the show.
His decision to join politics and more specifically running for a seat reserved for women, if at all he is not making a fool of all of us, comes as surprise to many. But again is he not nicknamed the Nairobi Women rep?
Pundits have previously argued that a man cannot vie for the seat as the position is reserved for women only, according to the constitution.
The current Kenyan constitution which was promulgated back in 2010, states that 47 women are elected by registered voters from each county across Kenya during the General Election.
So based on that alone, I’ll end the article here and wait for Maina to make another video where perhaps he will tell his fans what the stunt was all about.
