All police officers who were deployed to Raila Odinga’s strongholds to contain anti-Uhuru demonstrators are now under investigation.
Zipo.co.ke is privy to a memo by office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Joel Kitili, that says any officer who used their guns to quell the protests are expected to hand over the weapons for ballistic examinations.
This comes in the wake of the National Super Alliance (NASA) and a human rights group who accused the police of police of extra judicial killings. The Opposition leader says those killed during the skirmishes with anti riot police have hit 100 while the group puts their tally at 26.
Also according to the Raila Odinga-led Nasa, the police have been killing unarmed youths in the slums and hiding the evidence by ferrying away the bodies in body bags to hide the evidence.
This comes amid reports that Police have been using excessive force on citizens who are exercising their right to picket, leading to a number of casualties including a 6-month-old baby.
A 10-year-old girl named Stephanie Mokaya died while playing with her siblings at the balcony of their home in Mathare after a stray bullet went through her chest leaving a big hole in the wall.
“All firearms must be submitted for examination and case files disposed of trough the normal legal process. Follow up reports will be sent to Police Headquarters indicating their status and compliance,” read part of the memo.
Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i had initially denied that police were using live bullets in the protests. Nairobi Police boss Japheth Koome on the other hand approved of the use of firearms saying it was necessary in the protection of life and property.
