The election dust is yet to settle but politicians are already lining up their evidence in readiness for epic court battles after losing in the August 8, 2017 General Election, afraid that they will freeze in the cold for the next five years.
Zipo.co.ke has established that at least eleven politicians who vied for Governor seats have indicated they would challenge their rivals’ victories.
They cite irregularities during the voting and tallying of votes among other things.
They include;
1. Governor Evans Kidero (ODM) -Nairobi
2. Peter Munya (PNU) -Meru
3. John Mruttu (ODM) -Taveta
4. David Nkedianye (ODM) -Kajiado
5. Walter Nyambati (JP) -Nyamira
6. John Munyes (JP) – Turkana
7. Senator Chris Obure (JP) – Kisii
8. Kakai Bisau (JP) -Trans Nzoia Governor
9. Lenny Kivuti -Ebbu
Others likely to seek the court’s redress concerning the poll outcome are Machakos Wiper candidate Wavinya Ndeti, who put up a spirited fight against the incumbent and winner Alfred Mutua of MCC, and former Ambassador to Tanzania Chirau Mwakwere who was floored by Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya.
Prior to the polls, Chief Justice David Maraga urged candidates who will be dissatisfied with the outcome to file petitions in court.
He noted the judiciary is prepared to efficiently and expeditiously resolve the disputes.
“I will, if necessary, allow our judicial officers to work outside the official hours — into the night and through weekends — to ensure we keep to the constitutional timelines without compromising on the quality of rulings,” he said.
Outgoing Meru county boss Peter Munya is on record saying the results were computer-generated to favour his opponent Kiraitu of Jubilee and promised his supporters that he will challenge the outcome in court.
“We are going to join forces with other Kenyans in restoring democracy.” He added.
His Nairobi counterpart Evans Kidero says he is gathering evidence on election malpractices to challenge Sonko’s win.
