President Uhuru Kenyatta has dropped former President Mwai Kibaki as the chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
The position will now be held by career corporate manager Peter Muthoka who will serve for a period of five years with effect from December 8 as communicated in a gazette notice dated December 14.
A chancellor of a university is the honorary head and symbol of authority in higher institutions of learning and whose main function is to confer degrees and grant diplomas and other awards.
Mr Muthoka is an experienced corporate manager and entrepreneur in both the private and public sector spanning several years.
He retired from Kenya Commercial Bank in 2012 where he had served for eight years as a director and also the group Chair.
He is also the Chair of the Old Mutual Asset Managers, Old Mutual Investments Services, Bel Air Management Ltd, the Advocates Plaza Ltd and Faulu Microfinance Bank.
A billionaire businessman, Muthoka is also the chair of the Board of Fellows of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and chair of the Board of Trustees of The Management University of Africa (MUA).
