The Attorney General, Githu Muigai, has reminded National Super Alliance chief, Raila Odinga, that he would faces the death penalty should he take the oath president.
The AG also attacked top lawyers in the Opposition for misleading their leader.
Also faulted is Raila’s former running mate Kalonzo Musyoka, who is expected to be in the country after arriving from Germany where he has been attending to his ailing wife for the past two months.
The former Vice President skipped a crucial gathering of the People’s Assembly players at the Coast this past weekend, a meeting that was attended by all the other Nasa principals.
Mr Musyoka is yet to reveal whether he will take the oath alongside his boss but it is expected to make his plans known today or in the next few days.
The AG maintained that Mr Odinga’s planned inauguration would be illegal as Kenya already has a sitting president. Such a move, Prof Muigai warned, was highly treasonable whose penalty is death.
“Government institutions will do what they are mandated to do if and when the time is right,” Prof Muigai told journalists during the launch of the 2017-2022 Legal Aid National Action Plan in Nairobi on Monday, December 18.
Nasa hardliners are reportedly pushing for the oathing of Mr Odinga to be done before the turn of the year.
