Benson Omala Targets Higher Goal Count in the Forthcoming Mashemeji Derby with AFC Leopards
Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala is focused on securing a victory and boosting his goal total in the upcoming Mashemeji derby against their arch-rivals AFC Leopards, set to take place this Sunday, April 21, at Nyayo National Stadium.
This 95th edition of Kenya’s most famed football rivalry is anticipated to be a thrilling encounter as the two premier league powerhouses meet once again. Gor Mahia, who currently top the FKF Premier League with 54 points, seeks to continue their supremacy, while eighth-placed AFC Leopards, with 38 points, aims to break their rivals’ streak and ascend in the standings.
“We are thoroughly prepared and approach each game one at a time. We’re excited to play in the derby,” stated Omala. The derby provides not only a chance to claim bragging rights but also crucial points as the season advances.
“It’s a significant match, but I’m not feeling any pressure because I am focused on scoring and increasing my goal count,” he noted.
Omala, who currently leads the league’s top scorers with 12 goals, plays a vital role for K’Ogalo as they strive to retain their league championship. His nearest rival, Tito Okelo of Kenya Police FC, follows with ten goals.
Omala’s performance in the forthcoming derby could be crucial in shaping Gor Mahia’s season outcomes.
The rivalry between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards began with their first match on May 5, 1968. Throughout the years, both teams have experienced their share of victories and defeats, deepening their intense rivalry.
Gor Mahia has claimed the championship 20 times, whereas the Leopards have won the title 12 times.
“Our team is focused on winning this game as we continue our quest to retain the league,” he concluded.
