Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Mandela has signed a long-term contract with Stellenbosch FC, a club in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL). This move marks an important step in Mandela’s career, especially following an unsuccessful trial period at SuperSport United. Despite training under the experienced coach Gavin Hunt at SuperSport, Mandela was not offered a contract, paving the way for Stellenbosch FC to secure his services.
As Stellenbosch prepares for the upcoming DStv Premiership, which begins on September 14, the club is expected to officially announce Mandela as their newest signing before the season kicks off.
The addition of Mandela is seen as a strategic move by Stellenbosch, particularly in light of the departure of Ismael Toure, who is reportedly set to join Kaizer Chiefs. A source close to the situation confirmed the signing to a South African publication, noting that Mandela has agreed to a two-year contract with Stellenbosch FC.
Mandela brings valuable experience to his new club, having made 61 appearances in all competitions with Mamelodi Sundowns, including in the CAF Champions League. Stellenbosch hopes that his experience will strengthen their squad as they continue their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The club recently secured a 3-0 victory against Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs in the first leg of their current competition, and they are now looking ahead to the return leg this coming weekend.
Mandela’s move to Stellenbosch FC represents a fresh start and an opportunity to revitalize his career after a challenging season with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he only featured in nine matches, including three league games, during the 2023/2024 campaign.
