The Catalogue of Mistakes That Continues to Embarrass Gor Mahia

Benson Omala’s unsuccessful transfer to Algerian team JS Saoura is the latest in a series of blunders that have embarrassed Gor Mahia, the record champions of Kenya. Omala was poised to finalize a six-month loan to Algeria on Monday, but the deal fell through later that day, raising numerous questions about the cause of the failure.

Gor Mahia has absolved themselves, stating they did all they could to facilitate Omala’s move. However, the transfer’s collapse due to timing issues casts the club in a negative light. This incident is another glaring mistake by Gor Mahia, highlighting ongoing embarrassments from key administrative decisions.

Regarding Omala’s move, Gor Mahia’s chairman Ambrose Rachier revealed that while the club became aware of JS Saoura’s interest on Thursday, there were doubts about the legitimacy of the intermediaries, and even Omala was uninformed until the weekend. Despite giving their approval on Monday, the deadline for Algeria’s midseason transfer window, the transfer did not proceed as planned.

Rachier disclosed complications with the transfer process, including communication issues and last-minute attempts to finalize the deal. However, Omala’s agent, Stephen Ochiel, accused the club of insincerity and dragging their feet over financial demands, which led JS Saoura to sign another player instead.

The mismanagement of Omala’s transfer leaves Gor Mahia with a dissatisfied player and reflects poorly on the club’s handling of the situation. A straightforward refusal or timely approval could have spared the club from this embarrassment.

Another major blunder involved Gor Mahia’s disqualification from the 2023-24 CAF Champions League for failing to meet club licensing regulations, particularly due to unpaid salaries and fines to former players. This resulted in Kenya lacking representation in the Champions League and highlighted the club’s financial mismanagement.

Gor Mahia has also faced transfer bans from FIFA due to unpaid salaries to players and a coach, further tarnishing the club’s reputation and reflecting financial instability.

These incidents underscore the need for Gor Mahia to address administrative and financial challenges more effectively to avoid further damage to its reputation.
