The former assistant coach of Gor Mahia, Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo, is highly impressed with the emergence of Kevin Juma as a potential long-term replacement for the experienced Ernest Wendo.
Ernest Wendo has long been a key figure in the Gor Mahia midfield, but this season has seen a reduction in his playing time since the arrival of Kevin Juma from Nzoia Sugar in July.
Kevin Juma, a defensive midfielder, has consistently delivered strong performances this season, often partnering with Rodgers Mugisha in midfield. His standout moment came in September when he scored the winning goal against Ulinzi Stars. Coach Jonatan McKinstry has shown increasing faith in him, giving him more starts.
Juma’s ability to quell opposition attacks with his composed presence in front of the defense, along with his willingness to drop back as an additional defender, has earned him praise. Additionally, he has showcased his skill in linking up with the team’s attack.
What has particularly impressed Pamzo is that Juma has been entrusted to start in crucial matches, including fixtures against Tusker and AFC Leopards, and has consistently delivered strong performances. Pamzo believes that Juma is the natural successor to Wendo in the midfield.
Pamzo also appreciates the depth that both Juma and Wendo provide to Coach McKinstry in central midfield. This allows the coach to make tactical choices, whether he needs an all-out attacking approach or seeks to secure a lead by having both players on the field.
Furthermore, McKinstry has demonstrated his ability to interchange Juma and Wendo during matches, adapting the team’s dynamic as needed. An example of this was seen in the recent match against Tusker when Juma was replaced by Wendo to alter the team’s midfield dynamics.
