Gor Coach Unveils Strategy to Fill Left Back Gap in Simiti’s Absence Against Murang’a Seal

Ochieng is recovering just over a week after suffering a head injury from colliding with goalkeeper Caleb Omondi as Gor Mahia fought to defeat AFC Leopards a week ago. As Gor Mahia gears up for their next game against Murang’a Seal, they face a tactical dilemma with key left back Geoffrey Ochieng sidelined due to his injury.

Ochieng incurred the head injury during a match against their arch-rivals AFC Leopards, following a collision with the goalkeeper while attempting to clear the ball.

Despite initial concerns and medical treatment, Ochieng was released from the hospital but will need at least 14 days off to adhere to concussion protocols. His absence, known affectionately as Simiti, is a considerable loss for Gor Mahia. His reliable performance has marked him as one of the prominent players in the league, highlighting his significance to the team.

Coach McKinstry has recognized the gap left by Ochieng’s absence, stating, “We will miss him because he has been one of the players of the year in the league.”

To address the gap at left back, McKinstry is adjusting the team’s lineup and exploring different options. Bryson Wangai, primarily a left forward, is considered a viable alternative due to his capability to play as a full back.

McKinstry has faith in Wangai’s ability to adapt to this defensive role, noting, “Young Bryson Wangai is actually a left back by trade. He has done well breaking into the team as a left forward, but he is actually a full back.”

Moreover, McKinstry is contemplating using Philemon Otieno, although there are concerns about his full match fitness. Despite these concerns, McKinstry sees him as a reliable choice, potentially contributing from the bench if needed.
