Gor Mahia Aim to Secure 21st League Title Against Muhoroni Youth on Sunday
FKFPL champions Gor Mahia will be hoping to seal the title once and for all when they face Muhoroni Youth at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a at 3 PM on Sunday.
Gor Mahia have largely maintained their top position since late 2023, after Posta Rangers’ strong start to the league. Now, they need just a single point to claim a record 21st league crown.
A win would also serve as a parting gift for coach Johnathan McKinstry, who is set to join the Gambia National Team after securing the title for the club.
K’ogalo has been in impeccable form for much of the season. Despite drawing their last match against KCB 0-0 in Murang’a, they have won four of their last five matches, with only another 0-0 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz after the international break preventing them from getting maximum points since their loss to Bandari in Mombasa.
With 64 points accumulated, they could finish the season with 76 points, surpassing the 70-point mark they achieved last season. Second-placed Tusker can only achieve a maximum of 64 points, as they currently sit on 56 after 31 games.
Gor Mahia are now almost certain to participate in the CAF Champions League next season.
“We have five games to go and we need two wins to confirm the championship. We are not looking at what others do, even if someone says our rivals dropped points and we only need one win. We are focused on picking up points,” said McKinstry. “We want to do better than last season. Last year we got 70 points; this year we want more. Last year we had 18 clean sheets; this is our 19th clean sheet of the season, so we have improved in that statistic.
“We want all our statistics to improve as a team because if we win the league but do less than last season, a part of us will not feel so good about that.”
For Muhoroni Youth, the situation is dire. They sit 17th in the league with 30 points, one point behind Shabana, who have played one more game, and are currently in the playoff place.
Muhoroni knows that a win or draw against the champions-elect will significantly help them avoid relegation, a feat they managed last season under coach Charles Odera. They have drawn three of their last five matches, but a win would put them back in the playoff position.
