Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has announced his decision to start goalkeeper Caleb Omondi for the upcoming away game against Murang’a Seal, as first-choice keeper Kevin Omondi is suspended. The team is set to play at St Sebastian Park, seeking maximum points to bolster their title chances, but they will be without Kevin Omondi, who was handed a straight red card in last month’s match against AFC Leopards.
Caleb Omondi proved himself capable after stepping in following Kevin Omondi’s 35th-minute ejection, and Coach McKinstry plans to stick with him, even though experienced goalkeeper Gad Mathews has returned to training. Mathews was the first-choice goalkeeper last season but is still regaining match fitness after a month away. “This was Gad’s fifth training session after a month away,” McKinstry explained to LigiTalk. “You never lose that ability as a goalkeeper, but match fitness and sharpness are not quite there after a break.”
Although Gad Mathews is contesting for his place and ready to be in the squad, McKinstry hinted that Caleb might continue in goal, referencing his solid performances against AFC Leopards, at the start of the year against Sofapaka, and in the charity shield against Homeboyz. “Everyone has seen what Caleb can do. He has never let us down, either this season or last, so we are quite comfortable with our goalkeeping situation,” McKinstry added.
Caleb Omondi, only 20, was a standout performer in the Mashemeji derby against AFC Leopards, helping 10-man Gor Mahia to a 1-0 victory. His competence in the air, effective command of his area, and ability to handle long balls brought stability to a tumultuous match, qualities that will be crucial once again in hostile territory this Saturday.
