Gor Mahia ‘Finalizing’ Documentation for Stadium Construction, Says Ambrose Rachier

Rachier has disclosed that Gor Mahia is finalizing plans for constructing their own stadium, aiming to address their financial issues in the long run. Ambrose Rachier, the outgoing chairman of Gor Mahia, has laid out the club’s strategy to achieve financial self-sufficiency in the future, which includes building a new stadium.

In recent years, Gor Mahia has faced significant financial hurdles that have impacted some of their goals, such as participating in continental competitions. The club was disqualified from the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League for failing to pay three former players on time.

Additionally, the club has seen a decline in fan attendance at matches, leading to a significant drop in matchday revenue. In a recent interview on Citizen TV, Rachier discussed his plans to improve the club’s financial situation, emphasizing the goal of self-sufficiency.

“We aim to become self-sufficient,” Rachier stated. “We want the club to generate its own revenue without solely depending on sponsorships, although sponsorships are crucial. Looking at sports globally, whether it’s La Liga, EPL, Bundesliga, or Serie A, all these clubs are supported by sponsors. Sponsorship is not something we can dismiss; it should complement our income, which we plan to generate through our own facilities. I’ve been discussing this, but some people think it’s just talk.

“We’re finalizing the title documents to have our own stadium. Acquiring a title deed is beyond our control, as seen with the lawyers’ protests over operations. That’s something I can’t manage.”

Rachier has urged the Federation to create an environment that encourages fans to return to the stadium without hesitation. “Besides getting our own stadium and generating income, we also intend—and I call upon our federation—to create an atmosphere that welcomes fans back to the stadium. Gor has always relied on fan support, whether through large turnouts at games or contributions to strengthen our finances.”

The chairman also mentioned plans to learn from Tanzania’s Young Africans (Yanga) on their journey to becoming a powerhouse in African football. “I recently met with the president of Yanga in Cairo, and we’re planning a benchmarking visit to see how they’ve achieved their success. This will allow us to learn from their experiences.”
