Ian Otieno Leaves Zesco United for South African Premier Soccer League Team
Richards Bay, a team in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, has officially announced the signing of Kenyan international goalkeeper Ian Otieno. This move follows Otieno’s departure from Zambia Super League side Zesco United, where he was a key player for five years.
During his tenure at Zesco United, Otieno established himself as a reliable and skilled goalkeeper, contributing to the team’s success, including winning the Zambian Super League title in the 2020/21 season. His performances have earned him a reputation as a dependable presence between the posts.
Richards Bay Football Club expressed their excitement about the signing in a press release: “Richards Bay Football Club is thrilled to welcome Goalkeeper Ian Otieno. His proven track record and experience in international competitions, including the CAF Confederation Cup, will be invaluable to our squad.”
This strategic move aims to strengthen Richards Bay’s squad ahead of the 2024/25 season, following their successful bid to secure a spot in the Premier Soccer League through last month’s promotion/relegation playoffs. Otieno is expected to replace Jackson Mabokgwane, who recently left the club.
Otieno’s experience and consistent performance make him an ideal candidate to lead the team from the back, reducing their risk of facing another relegation scare. The 30-year-old goalkeeper has also been a regular member of the Kenya national team, playing a significant role in their triumph at a four-nation tournament in Malawi earlier this year. His international experience will be a key asset for Richards Bay as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Competing with former PSL goalkeepers Toaster Nsabata and Mwenya Chibwe at Zesco United has prepared Otieno well for the challenges of South African football.
