Abana Abeingo captain Moses Mudavadi shared his heartfelt reflections after their triumphant win in the Elijah Lidonde Cup. Kakamega Homeboyz’s skipper revealed their strong preparation for the victory against their Ingo Derby rivals, AFC Leopards, in the 2023 final.
The match, held at the famous Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, was a display of the unyielding spirit of both teams, with Davies Kasirye’s goal in the 75th minute clinching the victory for Homeboyz.
This win was particularly sweet for Homeboyz, as it served as redemption following a recent 2-0 defeat to AFC Leopards in the FKF Premier League.
Mudavadi, the Homeboyz captain, spoke of the final’s importance and the team’s determination that led to their win. “It was a great final. We had prepared since they defeated us in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, and this time we were playing at home,” he stated.
The 28-year-old attacking midfielder also acknowledged the intense rivalry between the two teams, evident in the confrontations and incidents during the match.
The Elijah Lidonde Cup, named after a former AFC Leopards legend, is an annual event showcasing Kenya’s top football talents. This year, the tournament featured AFC Leopards, Kakamega Homeboyz, Nzoia Sugar FC, and Mulembe United FC, emphasizing the players’ passion and dedication to honoring a football icon.
In 2022, AFC Leopards won the tournament with an 8-7 penalty shootout victory over Nzoia Sugar at Bukhungu Stadium, intensifying the rivalry with Kakamega Homeboyz and setting the stage for the dramatic 2023 final.
Homeboyz’s victory not only secured them the Elijah Lidonde Cup but also a significant prize of Ksh1 million, while AFC Leopards received Ksh500,000 for their efforts.
