John Kamau, head coach of Posta Rangers, has led the team to a surprising and notable early challenge for the title this season, a significant leap from their 12th-place finish last season when he rejoined the team.
Kamau, in his 12-year tenure in Kenyan top-flight football, has established himself as a coach who excels in player development. This period also includes coaching the Kenya U20 team. However, he now feels it’s time to aim for the championship.
Reflecting on his lengthy career, Kamau expressed, “This being my 12th year in the Kenyan Premier League, I believe I should start competing for titles. After dedicating my career to developing players, I feel it’s time for me to pursue a championship. In a way, I think I’ve sold myself short by not doing this sooner.”
Kamau also shared his philosophy about dealing with losses, asserting that he isn’t afraid of losing as it’s a natural part of the game. He emphasized the importance of building on every result, whether it’s a win, draw, or loss.
Kamau’s distinguished career began at Thika United, where he first shone as a goalkeeper. He transitioned to coaching in 2010, focusing initially on the club’s goalkeeping department. He later advanced to coaching Thika United’s junior team and serving as an assistant coach for the senior squad, under the guidance of Juma Abdalla, leading the academy side to the KPL Under-19 title.
In December 2014, Kamau embarked on a new journey with KPL newcomers Posta Rangers, stepping in after Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolo’s tenure ended. His time with the Rangers concluded in 2018 when he joined KCB FC, a second-tier team striving for promotion.
Kamau replaced Leonard Saleh at KCB FC after the team’s unsuccessful bid for promotion in the 2017 season. In the 2020/2021 season, Kamau was appointed assistant coach at Wazito, working under Francis Kimanzi, though his tenure was brief due to a challenging season.
In January 2022, Kamau was named head coach of Mathare United, succeeding Ezekiel Akwana, who was dismissed following poor performances. With his extensive experience and developmental focus, Kamau now sets his sights on a long-awaited title win to highlight his successful coaching career.
