Kenya Police Directed to Pay Ex-Coach Ksh 4 Million for Wrongful Dismissal
Kenya Police have been ordered to pay their former coach, Francis Baraza, Ksh 4 million following his sacking in September 2023.
Baraza, who was dismissed by the Police after a poor start to the season, sought legal action over what he claimed was an unfair dismissal. The former Sony Sugar coach initially demanded Ksh 4.9 million from the Police, which included Ksh 3.2 million for constructive dismissal, Ksh 800,000 for unfair termination, his salary arrears for September 2023, and Ksh 400,000 for the notice period.
The Sports Disputes Tribunal ruled in favor of most of his claims, directing the Police to pay Baraza Ksh 3.6 million for 10 months’ salary arrears from September 2023 to June 2024, along with an additional Ksh 400,000 as one month’s salary in lieu of notice.
In addition to the compensation, Police were also ordered to cover the costs of the lawsuit.
Baraza had initially demanded that the Police pay his dues within seven days, threatening legal action if they failed to comply. When a payment plan was not established, he followed through with his legal proceedings. His legal representatives, Ochutsi Munyendo & Company Advocates, also instructed Police FC not to communicate with Baraza directly but to handle the matter through the legal firm.
Baraza had previously led the Police to an impressive fourth-place finish in the 2022-23 season before being replaced by Croatian coach Zdravko Logarusic.
