The midfielder based in Kenya has been selected as one of the six for the South Sudan team for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe. Charles Ouma, a midfielder for Kenya Police FC, is one of six players based in Kenya who have had the honor of being called up to the South Sudan national team for the initial round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe.
The 20-year-old midfield powerhouse first attracted the attention of national selectors in July 2023, when he was called up to the Kenya national team, the Harambee Stars, by coach Engin Firat for the Four Nations tournament in Mauritius. Although he did not play in the tournament, Ouma’s potential was clear, leading him to switch his allegiance to South Sudan, where he hopes to have a significant impact.
Ouma’s journey to international recognition began at Sindo United before he moved to Kenya Police in 2020. With a commanding presence in midfield, he has shown the ability to play both in defense and as a central attacking midfielder.
His key role in helping Kenya Police gain promotion to the top tier is a testament to his ability to perform under pressure and contribute to his team’s achievements. South Sudan, the newest nation in Africa, is preparing for the qualifiers with a solid group of players based in Kenya.
Besides Ouma, the South Sudanese team includes five other Kenya-based players: defender Toha Rashid from Kenya Police; midfielder Assad Musa from AFC Leopards; midfielder Arap Koul from Martis FC; striker Tito Okello from Kenya Police; and Paul America Jawa from Rainbow FC. The Bright Stars’ campaign kicks off on March 20th with a trip to Sao Tome for the first leg of the qualifiers.
The second leg is set for March 26th, with the location to be confirmed. This schedule coincides with the next FIFA window, ensuring that the matches are within the international calendar, allowing for adequate preparation and rest between games.
Paul America Jawa, another key figure, has played a crucial role in South Sudan’s U20 endeavors, including their participation in the U20 AFCON in Egypt in 2023. His experience at the youth level will undoubtedly aid the senior team as they strive to move past the preliminary round and into the group stages of the competition.
