Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Mokwena Praises Brian Mandela’s Influence Despite Harambee Stars Omission

Rhulani Mokwena has offered high praise for Brian Mandela’s resilience and leadership at Mamelodi Sundowns, despite his recent exclusion from the Harambee Stars roster. Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach, Rhulani Mokwena, has commended the outstanding attributes of center-back Brian Mandela despite his absence from the Harambee Stars team for the upcoming Four Nations Tournament in Malawi. Mandela’s career has been characterized by significant hurdles, including a severe knee injury, limiting his appearances to 22 matches for the Sundowns across two seasons. Despite only making two starts and six appearances off the bench, Mokwena has highlighted his critical role within the team. “Brian is a unique individual,” Mokwena stated in an interview with Daily Nation. “For Brian to continue playing football [in those +20 games], he’s defying expectations. Following a severe knee injury, the odds were against him. Yet, here he is, not just playing but also inspiring through his attitude and commitment.” Mokwena also touched upon the severe adversity Mandela overcame, which could have ended his career. “I mean, facing such a serious knee injury, from a mental standpoint, he could have given up on playing,” Mokwena noted. Beyond his performances on the pitch, Mandela’s leadership has been identified as vital for the Sundowns, particularly within a team filled with talent and experience. “His leadership off the field is incredibly important,” Mokwena added. Mokwena’s accolades go beyond Mandela, recognizing the overall resilience and spirit of the Sundowns squad. “Apart from Brian, we have many individuals who have overcome challenges and continue to evolve and excel. As a club, we’re fortunate to have the kind of characters and personalities in our team that we do,” he remarked. Despite his significant contributions to the Sundowns, Mandela’s recent career decisions have led him to step back from international play with the Harambee Stars. Since his arrival at Masandawana in 2020, Mandela has played a key role in the team winning three consecutive league titles (2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023).
