Harambee Stars skipper Michael Olunga is set to continue his impressive goal-scoring streak in the Asian Champions League with Al Duhail, as they conclude their group stage against Persepolis in Iran this Tuesday.
Despite Al Duhail’s slim chances of progressing in the tournament, where they are currently third in Group F with four points, trailing leaders Al-Nassr with 13 points and Persepolis with eight, Olunga has been a standout performer. Al Duhail, who reached the semi-finals last season, faces mathematical challenges to qualify, with only the top teams from each group and the three best second-placed teams from the West Asian groups advancing.
Playing for pride, this match offers Olunga, who has scored 18 goals for Al Duhail in the Champions League, a chance to further enhance his record. His notable performances include a brace against FC Istiklol of Tajikistan, contributing to the team’s sole victory in the tournament.
Al Duhail’s campaign has been challenging, marked by a series of defeats and a solitary win, but Olunga’s three goals have been a highlight. He scored against Al-Nassr, assisted Philippe Coutinho in the rematch, and netted two goals against FC Istiklol.
Olunga attributed the team’s struggles to injuries, but there’s hope for a dignified exit. Al Duhail also seeks to improve their standing in the Qatar Stars League, where they currently sit fifth, trailing the leaders Al Gharafa by seven points after a recent loss to Umm Salal.
