Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga kept his team’s trophy hopes alive by scoring twice as Al Duhail advanced to the semi-finals of the Emir Cup. Michael Olunga continued his excellent form, scoring twice to secure a 3-2 victory for Al Duhail over Al Arabi and propel his team into the semi-finals of the Emir Cup.
Picking up where he left off last week with a goal that helped Al Duhail reach the quarter-finals, Olunga demonstrated his quality again on Monday.
Youssef Msakni, a Tunisian winger, initially put Al Arabi ahead just three minutes into the game. However, Olunga quickly equalized five minutes later, only for Msakni to score again two minutes later, making it 2-1 in favor of the visitors. Philippe Coutinho, former midfielder for Liverpool and Barcelona, then tied the game at 2-2 in the 25th minute.
After the break, Al Duhail increased the pressure, with Olunga scoring his second and the team’s third goal in the 59th minute. Under Christophe Galtier’s management, they held on to secure the victory and a spot in the semi-finals.
This win is significant for Al Duhail, who aim to end the season with some silverware after failing to defend their league title and exiting the Asian Champions League at the group stage. The Emir Cup represents their only chance to secure a trophy in a disappointing campaign that finds them sixth in the league standings, following a stellar 2022-23 season in which they won three trophies and reached the Champions League semi-final.
