Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has outlined what Kenya must avoid to secure maximum points in Friday’s crucial match against Burundi.
Olunga emphasized the need for his teammates to play with confidence to overcome Burundi in their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday.
Kenya will face the Swallows with three points at stake, as both teams aim to stay in contention for World Cup qualification.
The match will take place at the Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi. Despite lacking home support, Olunga is relying on their preparations and urging his teammates to avoid mistakes.
“Burundi won their last match 3-2 and lost 2-1, so they are not an easy team. They have good players, and we know their capabilities, but we trust in our preparations and are confident we will win,” Olunga said on Thursday.
“We all need to play with confidence because the match will be physically demanding, and the weather is hot. Everyone must push themselves and stay hydrated. The team that makes fewer mistakes will win.”
Olunga has been in excellent form for the national team, scoring seven goals in the last three matches, including one against Burundi in a 1-1 draw in 2015. However, he prioritizes the team’s success over individual accolades.
“We are working as a team to correct our mistakes and position ourselves well. I will take responsibility, whether in defense or scoring,” he added.
Kenya and Burundi both have three points from two matches in Group F, while Ivory Coast and Gabon each have six points.
