Newcastle United, currently placed 6th in the Premier League, has consistently been one of the league’s top contenders over recent years.
Last season, they made it to the Champions League but finished 4th in their group, which included Paris Saint-Germain, managing only 5 points and exiting the competition at the group stage.
In the 2024-25 Premier League season, Newcastle has made a promising start. They won their opening match against Southampton (1-0), drew with Bournemouth (1-1), secured victories over Tottenham (2-1) and Wolverhampton (2-1), but suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Fulham in their fifth game.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, who are leading the league, played against Arsenal in a high-stakes early-season match.
City’s Erling Haaland opened the scoring early in the 9th minute, but Arsenal responded quickly with a Calafiori equalizer 10 minutes later, followed by a Gabriel header that gave Arsenal the lead before halftime.
Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard was sent off just before the break, leaving Arsenal to play the second half with 10 men.
City took advantage, with John Stones scoring a dramatic equalizer in the 95th minute, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Despite the tie, Manchester City remains at the top of the Premier League with 13 points.
In the transfer market, Newcastle managed to keep control of their squad while offloading players like Eliot Anderson (to Nottingham Forest for €42 million) and Yankuba Minteh (to Brighton for €35 million). They also made notable signings, including Lewis Hall from Chelsea (€33 million), Kelly from Bournemouth (free transfer), and Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest (€23 million).
However, none of these new additions have yet broken into the starting lineup. Key players such as Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Lewis Miley, and former captain Jamaal Lascelles are still out due to injury. Harvey Barnes has been a standout performer, scoring 3 goals in the league, including the only goal in their recent loss to Fulham.
For Manchester City, the summer transfer window was relatively quiet, with their only major addition being Savinho (€35 million), who assisted Haaland’s goal against Arsenal. Key departures included Julian Alvarez (to Atlético Madrid for €75 million), Joao Cancelo (to Al-Hilal for €23 million), and Kalvin Phillips (on loan to Ipswich).
Haaland has already netted 10 goals this season, with Savinho contributing 3 assists. City is also dealing with injuries, as Nathan Aké and Oscar Bobb are still recovering, while Kevin de Bruyne is expected to return soon.
Prediction
Both teams have shown a tendency for high-scoring games. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in 13 of Manchester City’s last 16 away matches, and their last seven games overall have followed this trend.
Similarly, 12 of Newcastle’s last 15 home matches have also produced more than 2.5 goals. Considering this, another thrilling, high-scoring encounter is expected.
Prediction: Newcastle 1 – 2 Manchester City
