Ulinzi Stars Midfielder Discusses How Soccer Rescued Him from Crime and Drugs Following School Dropout

Dennis Magige, a midfielder from Mombasa and player for Bandari, has opened up about his challenging journey before breaking into professional football.

Magige, who had to leave school due to financial constraints, found solace and opportunity in football. He initially shone in school tournaments at Maji Safi in Likoni, which led to his discovery by a coach. This opportunity led to him joining a local team, Koshen Stars, and later Shell Beach, formed by community elders.

In 2010, he joined Shell Beach, where the players received a small stipend for games. This period was a glimmer of hope for Magige, who used his earnings to support his family. However, financial difficulties led to the team’s dissolution, leaving Magige out of football and turning to fishing and shell picking for survival.

The same coach who first recognized his talent eventually sought him out again, leading to Magige playing for Bandari Youth. His talent was noticed by Bandari FC coaches, and along with other players like Swaleh Chacha, Abdalah Hassan, and Keegan Ndemi, he was promoted to the senior team.

Magige credits senior team members like Felly Mulumba and David Naftali for their encouragement and help in adapting to the higher level of play. He joined Bandari senior in 2017, spent five years there, moved on loan to Western Stima, and then returned to Bandari. When another loan opportunity arose, he chose Ulinzi, having previously played for Warriors.

Magige’s journey in football, marked by challenges and perseverance, has not only transformed his life but also served as an inspiration to many youths in Likoni. He emphasizes the importance of discipline and hard work in football, sharing how the sport has positively impacted his life and his family’s.
