Shabana FC has been battling fan disturbances alongside on-field challenges since their ascent to the FKF Premier League after 17 years out of the spotlight. On an invigorating October afternoon in 2023, the atmosphere at Ulinzi Sports Complex was thick with anticipation as FKF Premier League newcomers Shabana FC squared off against the experienced AFC Leopards.
However, the lively cheers and vivid colors soon shifted to a more troubling story, overshadowing the club’s hopeful return to top-tier football. The conduct of some Shabana fans, characterized by fence-breaking and throwing objects, has emerged as a major concern, sparking debates over sportsmanship and the future of fan interaction in Kenyan football.
Following unsettling events at matches against AFC Leopards and Tusker FC, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) expressed its worries, highlighting security reports of Shabana supporters partaking in actions “both dangerous and disruptive to the game.”
“We would like to remind you that your fans’ actions reflect on both the club and the league at large. It is the club management’s duty to ensure fans behave in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner. We strongly encourage you to address this issue promptly and prevent its recurrence,” a portion of the statement read. Shabana FC has pledged to act firmly against those responsible, recognizing their fans’ essential support but stressing the importance of respectful celebration.
“We understand that emotions can run high during goal celebrations, but we urge every fan to remember the values that guide our team,” the club stated.
Despite these assurances and a coaching change, with Sammy Omollo replacing Sammy Okoth, an improvement in fan conduct is still awaited. Four months later, a loss to Kenya Police FC resulted in violent outbursts from disgruntled fans, necessitating police intervention.
As the season advances, Shabana’s on-field difficulties seem to reflect the disturbances among the spectators. With only four victories in 22 matches, the team is in 17th place, reflecting their offensive capabilities yet pointing out significant defensive weaknesses.
The team has let in 32 goals, highlighting a key area for improvement to maintain their Premier League position. The ongoing saga of fan unrest and poor performance raises crucial questions about supporters’ role in contemporary football.
While fan passion and loyalty are vital, there must be a clear distinction between enthusiastic support and disruptive conduct.
Shabana FC’s call for their fans to celebrate constructively and politely is not merely a request for order but an appeal to maintain the essence and integrity of football. As the season continues, the club’s challenge extends beyond improving their league position to transforming a portion of their fan base’s behavior—a task crucial for preserving the club’s image and ensuring a safe, positive football environment.
The path forward involves not only the club’s management and players but also its fans, who must decide the legacy they wish to leave.
