Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala has praised the club’s fans for their role in maintaining his motivation during a period exceeding two months without scoring. Omala has acknowledged the fans’ support for helping him stay motivated throughout his seven-match goalless streak.
Omala ended his scoring drought of over two months by netting a goal in the fourth minute, leading K’Ogalo to a 1-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars in an FKF Premier League match on Saturday.
This challenging period, which lasted since December 9, 2023, saw Omala struggle to score. Despite many feeling frustrated by his goalless spell, Omala remained positive, buoyed by the patience and encouragement from Gor Mahia’s supporters. “I thank my teammates and the fans who have been supportive,” Omala stated. “Despite the goal drought, they’ve motivated me, assuring me the goals would come, and now they have.”
Omala emphasized that he kept his focus, continuously working on his finishing skills during training sessions, hopeful that his efforts would eventually bear fruit. “As a forward, it’s crucial to refine your finishing skills. If goals don’t come in one match, you try again in the next. I’ve stayed focused, knowing my moment would arrive, and now that it has, I aim to keep this momentum.”
With this goal, Omala’s season tally rises to 10 goals. However, his recent dry spell allowed others to narrow the gap in the race for this season’s Golden Boot. Tito Okello of Kenya Police and Francis Kahiro of Bandari FC are tied at eight goals each, while Vincent Owino of Nairobi City Stars follows with seven.
Omala is hopeful that this goal will be a turning point, allowing him to stay ahead in the competition and secure the Golden Boot, an accolade he missed last season due to a five-match goal drought that enabled Elvis Rupia, then with Kenya Police, to win the top scorer award.
With Gor Mahia leading the table by eight points over second-placed Posta Rangers, boasting 47 points, the team faces a series of challenging fixtures ahead, including matches against the mailmen, Bandari, and Kakamega Homeboyz.
