Charles Ouma, a product of the AFC Leopards academy and previously part of the Harambee Stars squad for the Mauritius Four Nations tournament in June, has now declared his allegiance to South Sudan, receiving a call-up from the national team. The Kenya Police midfielder, Charles Ouma, has shared his reasons for leaving the Harambee Stars to play for South Sudan at the international level. Ouma is one of six players based in Kenya who have been honored with a call-up to the South Sudan national team for the preliminary round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe. The 20-year-old midfield powerhouse first caught the attention of national team selectors in July 2023 when he was called up to the Kenya national team, the Harambee Stars, by coach Engin Firat for the Four Nations tournament in Mauritius. Despite not playing in the tournament, Ouma’s potential was clear, prompting his switch to South Sudan, where he hopes to make a significant impact. Ouma’s football journey started at Sindo United before he joined Kenya Police in 2020. “I want to play and enhance my resume,” Ouma stated to Pulse Sports regarding his decision. “Choosing to go there was my decision, and they needed me, so I couldn’t refuse.” While at Police, Ouma has teammates like South Sudan internationals Tito Okello and Rashid Toha, but he insists they did not influence his decision to switch allegiances. “No one persuaded me. It was my own decision. I don’t even speak Arabic, but they were impressed by my footballing aspirations.” Ouma’s ambition to turn professional also influenced his choice to represent South Sudan, believing that accumulating more international caps will increase his chances of playing abroad. “The more caps I get, the better my chances of turning professional, and I’m optimistic about the future.” From the beginning at Sindo United to his move to Kenya Police in 2020, Ouma has demonstrated his capability, excelling in midfield with the ability to play both defensively and as a central attacker. His critical role in securing Kenya Police’s promotion to the premier league showcases his performance under pressure and his significant contributions to team success.
