Gor Mahia Queens have officially severed ties with Acakoro and are set to make their debut in the Women National Super League (WNSL) against Bandari Queens.
The women’s team of FKF Premier League giants Gor Mahia, Gor Mahia Queens, are already setting their sights on promotion to the FKF Women Premier League (FKFWPL) as they prepare for their maiden WNSL campaign.
These debutants are eager to follow in the footsteps of their male counterparts and establish themselves as a dominant force in the women’s leagues.
With a newly formed squad, head coach Francis Ocholla is optimistic about the season ahead. “We’ve been doing well in training, and all the players are in great shape physically and mentally,” Ocholla told Citizen Digital. “Our upcoming match against Bandari Queens will be a great opportunity to assess our team as we make our NSL debut.”
Gor Mahia Queens will kick off their WNSL campaign with an away match in Mombasa against Bandari Queens. Ocholla is determined to start strong, with the team’s primary goal being promotion to the women’s top-tier league.
“As a new team, it’s crucial for us to strengthen certain areas. We’ll be looking to sign more attackers and at least two defenders when the transfer window opens. Our ambition is to secure promotion to the KWPL next season,” explained Ocholla.
The coach also emphasized that the club has fully parted ways with Acakoro, the women’s team previously acquired and rebranded as Gor Mahia Queens. “We’ve completely moved on from Acakoro. No player from that team is in our current lineup. This is a fresh start, and based on the friendlies we’ve played so far, we see a lot of promise.”
Gor Mahia’s partnership with Acakoro Ladies, initiated in June 2023, led to the rebranding of the team. The move was in response to the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s Club Licensing regulations, which require clubs participating in inter-club competitions to have a women’s team within their structure.
