Despite the hype, only two independent candidates were elected as Members of Parliament in ODM strongholds of Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori and Siaya counties.
Only two out of 29 constituencies in Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya counties will now be represented by party rebels.
This is different picture from what political commentators had painted. They said the Orange Party faced an imminent fall in the hands of the Independents following shambolic ODM nominations.
Not a single independent candidate won Governor, Women Representative and Senator seats, with ODM candidates having comfortable wins.
Exceptions are former Migori town mayor Peter Masara who won the Suna West seat in Migori county and current Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir, who showed his competition dust.
Shabbir who was once Mayor of the lakeside city got 33,032 votes to retain his seat beating Nicholas Odongo, who got 28,146 votes on an Orange Party ticket.
Olago Aluoch became the only other MP to win without the sponsorship of the ODM party, he vied the Kisumu West constituency on a Ford Kenya ticket garnering 33,731 votes, after flooring ODM’s John Awiti, who managed 22,416 votes.
Masara ran as an Independent after failing twice in ODM primaries. He got 19,341 votes overshadowing the incumbent, Joseph Ndiege (ODM), who got 1,025 votes.
