Benson Omala has officially been unveiled as a new signing by Lebanese club Al Safa SC, marking a significant step in his career by leaving Gor Mahia, the record FKFPL champions.
Initially, Omala was set to play a crucial role in Gor Mahia’s squad for the 2024/2025 season, with the club aiming to defend its league title and make a strong impact in the CAF Champions League. However, the 21-year-old striker has chosen to turn professional for the second time in his career, following a previous stint at Swedish club Linkoping City.
This move follows the collapse of potential transfers to two Algerian clubs earlier this year, which fell through at the last minute last February. Despite these setbacks, Omala remained focused on his future, expressing openness to new opportunities. “If anything tangible comes on the table and my club agrees with whoever is keen on my services, then why not?” Omala told SportsBoom.com. “I will move. But for now, it is all about Gor Mahia. I want to achieve a lot of success with this great club and win as many titles as possible.”
Gor Mahia had already anticipated Omala’s possible departure by signing Congolese striker Gedeon Bendeka on a two-year contract. The team also includes other attacking talents like Chris Ochieng and Mark Shaban, who joined from Green Commandos in January. These additions suggest that the club is well-prepared to fill the void left by Omala’s exit.
“Welcome Benson Omala to Serenity Club,” Al Safa FC announced on their social media pages, signaling the start of Omala’s new journey in Lebanese football.
Omala’s departure follows an outstanding season where he scored 19 goals, earning the FKF Premier League Golden Boot—a title he narrowly missed the previous year despite scoring 26 goals. As Gor Mahia prepares to face Sudanese side El Merreikh in the first leg of their preliminary CAF Champions League campaign on Sunday, they will do so without one of their top scorers. Omala’s move marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career as he seeks to make his mark on the international stage.
