Cameroon head coach Marc Brys has praised the growing unity within his squad, despite ongoing tensions behind the scenes, as they prepare for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya.
Brys expressed optimism about the positive atmosphere in the Indomitable Lions’ camp as they gear up for two decisive matches, scheduled for October 11 in Douala, Cameroon, and October 14 in Kampala, Uganda. These matches are critical in determining both teams’ fates in the 2025 AFCON tournament, which will take place in Morocco.
Kenya currently leads Group J after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Namibia, while Cameroon sits just behind them, level on points. The upcoming fixtures provide a key opportunity for both teams to solidify their positions in the group standings.
During the team’s first training session at the Ngo Ekelle Stadium in Yaoundé, Coach Brys emphasized the improvements within the camp, especially regarding working conditions. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made and believes these changes will positively influence the team’s performance.
“We’re all very happy to be working together in such a positive environment,” Brys said. “Even something as simple as the improvement in our clothing makes a difference. We need people around us who are ready to support the team, and that’s happening now. It’s much better than it was before.”
Brys also highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Sports and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), which has brought together a blend of technical staff. Despite the potential for coordination challenges, Brys remains confident in the team’s unified efforts.
“We’re pleased to have new members on board, and the teamwork has already shown positive results,” Brys noted. “There’s always pressure in football, especially when you’re representing a nation, but that comes with the job. We’re focused on the matches ahead, and the atmosphere in the camp is fantastic.”
Cameroon will look to capitalize on home advantage when they face Kenya on October 11 in Douala. The Indomitable Lions are determined to assert their dominance before heading to Uganda for the second leg on October 14.
