Gor Mahia Coach Alerts ‘Simiti’ Following Philemon Otieno’s Stellar Performance Against City Stars

Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has warned defender Geoffrey ‘Simiti’ Ochieng to stay vigilant after Philemon Otieno’s remarkable performance against Nairobi City Stars. McKinstry is thrilled with the squad’s depth, which he believes will help them counteract fatigue and injuries in their quest to keep the league title.

During the 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars on Saturday, McKinstry altered his starting lineup, notably including captain Philemon Otieno, who played his first match of the season as a full-back.

With Geoffrey ‘Simiti’ Ochieng unavailable, Otieno took on the left-back position and impressed his coach with his performance, suggesting a competitive battle for the starting spot between the two. McKinstry expressed his philosophy of fielding the best 11 players whenever possible, avoiding rotation unless absolutely necessary.

He praised Ochieng as one of the league’s best defenders but noted the necessity of rest for his ankle. McKinstry anticipates Ochieng’s return to near full fitness for the upcoming match against Posta.

Otieno’s performance, especially in containing Samuel Kapen, one of the season’s standout players, and supporting the attack, was highlighted by McKinstry. Otieno’s ability to also play as an inverted full-back added pressure on City Stars, especially in the first half.

With a match against lower league team Ukunda FC in the FKF Cup approaching, Otieno is expected to retain his position, providing another chance to prove his worth for more playing time.

McKinstry faces a pleasant dilemma with both full-backs at peak performance, resisting the urge to make extensive changes to his lineup this season.
