“Gor Mahia Goalkeeper Draws Parallels Between His Game and Legends Iker Casillas and Ederson”
Kevin Omondi, the custodian for Gor Mahia, has shed light on the similarities between his playing style and that of iconic Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, as well as Manchester City’s Ederson.
Omondi, who made the move to Gor Mahia from Sofapaka at the beginning of the season, has earned the trust of head coach Johnathan McKinstry and is currently the preferred goalkeeper for the team.
Despite registering only two clean sheets out of six games, Omondi has received praise for his exceptional ball-playing abilities, which have enabled Gor Mahia to build from the back. His distribution skills have also been commendable, a trait shared by the aforementioned goalkeepers.
Omondi believes that these skills are what set him apart and draw parallels with Casillas and Ederson, both of whom he idolizes.
“I used to watch Iker Casillas; he was left-footed like me and used his right hand,” Omondi explained to Sports Eye. “He played just like me, and I used to watch him a lot during his time at Real Madrid. He started at a young age and has always been my role model. Now, there’s Ederson, the goalkeeper for Manchester City; he’s also left-footed. I’m closely observing how he plays, his distribution, and his style of play from the back.”
Omondi is currently enjoying his role as the first-choice goalkeeper, despite facing stiff competition from the other three goalkeepers at Gor Mahia: Gad Mathews, last season’s Golden Glove winner, Dolf Junior Owino, and Caleb Omondi. He acknowledges the need to maintain consistent top-level performances to retain his spot.
“As a player, you must embrace competition to become the best, and if you shy away from it, you cannot excel,” he emphasized. “I noticed Gad here; last season, he won the title and had the most clean sheets, so I knew that coming to Gor, I was going to compete with one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Now, I’m training with him, and we must both strive to secure our positions.”
However, Omondi is aware of areas where he can further develop as a goalkeeper, such as improving his concentration, positioning, and communication during matches.
“The more I communicate with my defensive line, the fewer goals we concede because it boosts my concentration levels,” Omondi added. He considers Laurence Juma and Caleb Omondi as his closest friends, both on and off the pitch.
