Gor Mahia Receives a Boost as Harambee Stars Defender Set to Be Fit for Al Ahly Clash

Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija is expected to recover in time for their crucial first-leg encounter against Al Ahly at the Nyayo National Stadium this Sunday. This comes as a significant boost for Gor Mahia ahead of the highly anticipated CAF Champions League round of 32 clash.

Omija, who had been ruled out of Kenya’s AFCON 2025 Qualifier against Namibia on Tuesday due to a knee injury sustained during the opening fixture against Zimbabwe, has reassured fans that his injury is not as severe as initially thought. Speaking about his condition, Omija said, “I got a knee injury against Zimbabwe and returned to Nairobi while the team traveled to South Africa. I have undergone MRI tests and confirmed it was just a knock, nothing serious.”

Despite being ruled out for the national team’s second Group J match in Johannesburg, South Africa, the defender has already begun physiotherapy and remains hopeful about his recovery. “I should be ready to play for my club, Gor Mahia, on Sunday against Al Ahly,” Omija stated confidently.

In Harambee Stars’ recent scoreless draw against Zimbabwe, Omija played a crucial role before being substituted due to the injury. His absence from the Namibia fixture poses a challenge for coach Engin Firat, who will need to adjust his defensive strategy for the crucial game at Orlando Stadium. Omija’s performance has been integral to the national team’s defense, and his absence is a blow.

At the club level, Omija has been vital for Gor Mahia’s defense, helping to free up teammate Rooney Onyango to push forward more often. His anticipated return for the clash against reigning African champions Al Ahly will be a massive boost for coach Leo Neiva’s squad as they aim to make an impact in the CAF Champions League.

Omija has proven his value not just defensively but also offensively. He scored his first goal for Gor Mahia during their dominant 5-1 win over El Merreikh in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round. His potential return adds strength to the squad as they prepare for one of their toughest challenges yet.

Fans will be eagerly following Omija’s recovery as Gor Mahia looks to maintain their strong form and as Harambee Stars adjust to his absence in the ongoing AFCON qualifying campaign.
