Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has revealed his tactical approach for the upcoming crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier against Namibia, following their goalless draw in the opener against Zimbabwe. The match will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Firat, reflecting on the Zimbabwe game, shared his plan to adopt a more defensive strategy, relying on counter-attacks to achieve a positive result against Namibia. His approach is influenced by injury concerns for key players Alphonce Omija and Erick Ouma. Omija was forced off early in the match against Zimbabwe due to a knock, while Ouma, one of Kenya’s key players on the left flank, had to be substituted in the final minutes due to an injury. Both players remain doubtful for the Namibia game, with their availability dependent on the medical team’s evaluation.
“I always seem to have a long list of injured players. In our first match, Alphonce Omija got hurt, and Erick Ouma couldn’t finish the game because of an injury,” Firat said in an interview with The Star. “We will have to rely on other players, but we’ll see what the medical team advises about bringing in replacements. It would be tough if we lose more than half the team.”
Namibia, coming off a narrow 1-0 loss to Cameroon, will be pushing for a win to keep their AFCON qualification hopes alive. Firat expects Namibia’s offensive approach to create opportunities for Kenya to exploit on the counter. “Namibia will play more offensively after their loss to Cameroon, which will make things easier for us. We plan to sit back and hit them on the counter,” Firat explained, outlining his strategy.
Firat faced criticism from fans and local coaches for his team selection and tactics against Zimbabwe, particularly his decision to play without a recognized striker. However, the coach defended his choices, highlighting the mental resilience required at this level of competition. “Everyone who played deserved their spot. It takes immense mental strength to perform at this level,” Firat said in response to the backlash.
With Omija and Ouma’s fitness in doubt, Firat may need to reshuffle his lineup for the Namibia match. However, he remains confident in the squad’s depth as Kenya seeks a vital result.
The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KBC Channel One, with Kenya aiming for their first victory of the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign.
