Firat has confirmed that his technical team has already selected a group of players to represent the country at the upcoming African Nations Championships (CHAN), with the potential for them to participate in a friendly match in America.
Engin Firat, head coach of the Harambee Stars, has outlined his strategy for preparing his team for the CHAN tournament scheduled for September in East Africa.
Traditionally, the tournament is exclusively for locally-based players, barring any participation from those playing abroad. Firat explained to Radio 47 that during his tenure, he has provided numerous opportunities for local players to showcase their abilities. This has enabled him to compile a list of potential players for the tournament.
Firat highlighted the comparative advantage of Harambee Stars in terms of local player availability compared to some of their rivals like Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Gambia.
“We’ve invited many local players and given them opportunities, which has helped us form our list and be prepared,” said Firat.
Additionally, Firat expressed his intention to request the federation to allow his assistant, Ken Odhiambo, to play a more active role with the ‘B’ team, composed entirely of locally-based players.
In January, FKF president Nick Mwendwa had mentioned plans for the team to engage in a friendly match against Ecuador, a plan that Firat has now confirmed.
“We’re also working towards giving the team an opportunity to travel to America in June, which I believe will further strengthen team cohesion. With the combination of experienced players and youngsters from the U18 and U20 squads, we aim to field a solid team for the tournament,” Firat added.
