Harambee Stars Midfielder Scores First Europa League Goal for Elfsborg Despite Defeat to AZ Alkmaar

Harambee Stars Midfielder Timothy Ouma Shines in Europa League Debut Despite Elfsborg’s Defeat to AZ Alkmaar

Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma made an impressive start to his UEFA Europa League journey, scoring on his debut for Swedish side Elfsborg. However, despite his efforts, Elfsborg narrowly lost 3-2 to Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

Ouma, who missed Kenya’s last two international matches against Namibia and Zimbabwe, has been in excellent form at club level. In the match against AZ Alkmaar, he was pivotal in Elfsborg’s attacking play. Not only did he open the scoring with a powerful strike, but he also provided an assist for his team’s second goal, showcasing his creativity and playmaking abilities. The 21-year-old midfielder won both of his aerial duels and was successful in six out of 11 ground duels, demonstrating his competitive edge throughout the game.

AZ Alkmaar started the game strongly, putting pressure on Elfsborg’s goalkeeper, Isak Pettersson, who made a key save early on from Troy Parrott’s shot. However, it was Elfsborg who took the lead against the run of play, with Ouma breaking the deadlock with a long-range shot that slipped through the hands of AZ goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.

AZ almost equalized through captain Jordy Clasie, whose fierce effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Pettersson. However, just before halftime, Pettersson’s mistake allowed Ruben van Bommel to equalize for AZ, as he dropped a routine cross, which Van Bommel capitalized on.

In the second half, Van Bommel struck again after a poor clearance from Elfsborg’s defense, putting AZ ahead 2-1. Elfsborg responded quickly when Simon Hedlund’s shot squeezed past Owusu-Oduro, leveling the match at 2-2.

AZ regained control in the 73rd minute when Jayden Addai won a penalty, which Troy Parrott converted, making it 3-2. Elfsborg’s chances of mounting another comeback were dashed when defender Sebastian Holmen was shown a red card late in the match for a foul on Parrott, reducing the Swedish side to ten men.

Van Bommel came close to completing his hat trick, but his efforts were thwarted twice, including a last-minute clearance off the line. AZ held on for their first Europa League victory, leaving Elfsborg with a tough road ahead as they prepare to face Athletic Bilbao in their next European fixture in Spain.

As Timothy Ouma continues to rise, he’ll aim to build on his standout performance, with Elfsborg looking to bounce back in upcoming challenging matches against European heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Galatasaray.
