Clifton Miheso of AFC Leopards is hopeful that their victory against Ingokho derby rivals Kakamega Homeboyz marks the beginning of a series of wins for the 13-time league victors.
The Leopards have had a challenging season, securing only a single win leading up to their clash with the FKF Cup champions. However, they managed a comfortable 2-0 triumph to escape relegation, moving up to 14th place, while Homeboyz missed their chance to reach 30 points.
Post-match, Miheso, the scorer of the opening goal, shared insights into the team’s resolve and the meeting that significantly motivated the players to perform well.
“The match was tough, but our team spirit was high, given our long stretch without a win,” Miheso relayed to Pulse Sports.
“As players, we had to come together and decide to win for our fans, as it had been quite some time since our last victory.
“I’m optimistic this win will lead to many more and set the tone for a successful second half of the season.”
Miheso expressed relief at breaking their scoring drought, with the team finally netting two goals from open play.
“We’ve struggled to find the back of the net, but today we’re thrilled to have scored twice from open play.
“The team overall performed admirably, and we’re aiming for similar outcomes and more critical goals in our upcoming matches.”
A growing rivalry exists between Homeboyz and Leopards, fueled by their shared fanbase in Western Kenya.
This rivalry was evident in their last encounter in May, which was halted due to hooliganism, leading to Homeboyz being declared the winner and the Leopards facing substantial penalties from the Football Kenya Federation.
