Kenneth Muguna Finally Explains His Celebration Against Gor Mahia

Kenneth Muguna has justified his goal celebration against his former team, Gor Mahia. On Saturday, February 3, in a game that ended Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run in the FKF Premier League with a critical 3-1 defeat, Kenya Police FC’s midfielder Kenneth Muguna found himself amidst controversy.

Facing his old team at Police Sacco Stadium, Muguna’s celebration after netting a goal ignited widespread disapproval from Gor Mahia supporters, who viewed it as disloyalty from their ex-captain. The match showcased former Gor Mahia talents, with Tito Okello, another previous Gor player, scoring two goals, both times with assists from former teammates Muguna and Francis Kahata.

Yet, the celebrations, especially Muguna’s, became a major point of contention among fans and critics. In response to the backlash, Muguna shed light on the reasons behind his celebration.

“The way I was received in that match, even before scoring, involved a lot of insults from the fans. That’s what prompted my reaction, and I don’t regret it because disrespect is met with disrespect,” Muguna stated during an interview with Turf Talk. Muguna’s time at Gor Mahia was notably successful, marked by winning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2016 with Western Stima and helping Gor secure league championships in 2017 and 2018.

Despite his significant contributions to the club, the midfielder felt underappreciated. “They need to recognize everything I did for the team and respect me as their former captain. However, that wasn’t the case during that match,” he further mentioned.

Not celebrating against former teams is a widely recognized gesture of respect in football, acknowledging previous affiliations and achievements. Nonetheless, Muguna chose to make a statement, venting his frustrations and perceived disrespect with a conspicuous celebration.

This incident has sparked debate over the nuances of player allegiance and the expectations of fans in contemporary football. Muguna’s career path included a return to Gor Mahia after playing for KF Tirana in Albania, indicating the club’s confidence in his talent.

Ultimately, it was Kenya Police FC’s appealing offer, through Tanzanian team Azam FC, that lured him away, a decision that has stirred controversy among Gor Mahia supporters.
