David Owino Ambulu, popularly known as “Messi,” has been sidelined by a knee injury that forced him to miss Kenya Police’s opening games of the season, including their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary matches two weeks ago.

Messi, a key figure for the Anthony Kimani-coached side, has been absent from the lineup due to a meniscus injury in his left knee. The club recently provided an update on his condition, shedding light on his recovery process and a potential return to action.

Having joined Kenya Police from KCB in January 2022, Messi quickly became a vital player, excelling both as a left-back and a midfielder. His versatility and consistent performances played a crucial role in the team’s success last season, particularly after then-head coach Salim Babu shifted him from defense to his preferred midfield position.

Messi’s impact was evident as he helped Kenya Police secure their first major trophy, the FKF Cup, and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in the club’s history. Unfortunately, he was unable to participate in the continental competition after sustaining the knee injury during pre-season.

According to the club’s recent statement, Messi underwent knee surgery seven weeks ago and is now in the rehabilitation phase. The club’s medical team remains optimistic about his progress. “David Ambulu (Messi) underwent left knee meniscus surgery seven weeks ago and is currently in rehabilitation. He has regained full range of motion and a normal gait. The focus is now on restoring strength, mobility, and stability in the knee,” the statement read.

Earlier this year, Messi was close to completing a move to Tainan City in Taiwan, but the transfer fell through due to complications regarding his release. He remains the only player on the club’s roster who is also a registered police officer.

While his rehabilitation is progressing well, Kenya Police fans will need to wait until at least the end of December for Messi’s return to the field, assuming there are no setbacks in his recovery.

Coach Anthony Kimani has openly expressed how much the team misses Messi’s presence, especially during their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Ethiopian Coffee, which they won before facing Zamalek. Unfortunately, Kimani will have to cope without his star player for an extended period.
