Kenya Police coach Salim Babu is banking on the experience and quality of former Harambee Stars forward Jesse Were to make a significant impact in their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup clash against Egyptian giants Zamalek. Were, who recently joined Police FC from Zesco United, already made an impression by scoring twice in a friendly match against Gor Mahia.
Having missed the earlier preliminary round against Ethiopia Coffee due to registration delays, Were is now set to be a key figure in the team’s second preliminary double-header against Zamalek. Despite Were’s absence, Kenya Police advanced past Ethiopia Coffee with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory, thanks to a crucial Rashid Toha header in the away leg.
The first leg of this highly anticipated encounter will be held at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium on September 14, with the return leg a week later in Cairo. Babu is confident that Were’s presence will help address the team’s recent struggles in front of goal during the earlier preliminary round.
“I’m excited to have Jesse for this game, especially after we struggled with scoring in the preliminaries. His quality is a big advantage for us,” Babu said.
Jesse Were, who is Zesco United’s all-time leading scorer, also brings experience from stints with AFC Leopards, Mathare United, and Tusker FC, where he won the FKFPL Golden Boot in 2015. Kenya Police signed Were during the transfer window between July 21 and August 31, and since then, the forward has impressed the coaching staff with his fitness and dedication in training.
“Since he joined us, Jesse has been training superbly, and I’m really happy with his progress. I believe he has a lot to offer and will be crucial for us this season, starting with the Zamalek match,” Babu emphasized, highlighting his optimism about the striker’s role in the team.
Were’s sharp form was evident in a recent 2-0 friendly win against Gor Mahia at the Police Sacco Grounds, where he scored both goals. The victory was even more impressive given that several key players were absent due to national team commitments.
“I gave all available players a chance, and I’m pleased with how we played. Jesse performed well, and I’m satisfied with our progress. We’ll keep improving ahead of Saturday’s game,” Babu added, commending his squad’s depth and adaptability as they prepare for the upcoming challenge.
