Kenyan Winger Based in Australia Set for First Harambee Stars Call-Up

The 28-year-old winger, who has experience with Australia’s U23 team, is poised to switch allegiances and represent Kenya after receiving an invitation from Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat. Bruce Kamau, born in Kenya before relocating to Australia at the age of four, has previously shown interest in playing for Australia. However, it appears that Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has persuaded him to represent his birth nation. Now 28, Kamau, capable of playing both as a winger and an attacking midfielder, has yet to be called up by the Socceroos despite his youth international appearances, leaving him eligible to play for Kenya. He is currently with Perth Glory in the Australian A-League, having transferred there from OFI Crete in the Greek Super League last year. Kamau’s journey included a stint with Western Sydney Wanderers from 2018 to 2021, where he scored 10 goals in 64 appearances before moving to OFI Crete on a three-year deal. He was loaned to Melbourne Victory for the latter part of the 2022-23 season before joining Perth Glory in August. Having made five appearances and scored two goals for the Australian Under-23 team, Kamau’s potential inclusion is part of coach Firat’s strategy of integrating foreign-based or -born players into the Kenyan squad. In a 2019 interview with Alex Chamwada’s Daring Abroad, Kamau emphasized the importance of hard work and seizing opportunities. This perspective comes after he expressed a strong desire to represent Australia in an earlier interview, stating his goal of playing for the Socceroos if given the chance. However, with an emerging opportunity to play for Kenya, Harambee Stars supporters are eager to see if Kamau can bring additional talent to their team.
